T.A.T. Tapas Acupressure Technique:
Healing Personal, Ancestral and Cultural Trauma
TAT is a simple and effective method of relieving stress, anxiety, and whatever is keeping us from being happy in our lives. We often have unconscious or hidden beliefs that influence us, and TAT is a wonderful, easy way to uncover and dissolve them. The TAT logo says "Real change, real easy." TAT is a form of energy psychology, an emerging field in the therapeutic world.
Where did TAT come from? What is it, exactly?
In 1993, Tapas Fleming, an acupuncturist in California, discovered that certain points on the head, when touched, increased the efficacy of her treatments. From this discovery, the TAT Pose was developed.
When doing TAT we simply put our hands on our heads in the TAT Pose while we focus on a series of statements, the Steps of TAT. Once we have experienced TAT we may do sessions on our own by downloading a free brochure How to Do TAT for Stressful Events in your life from Tapas' website: www.tatlife.com.
What can TAT help with?
TAT has been successfully used to help with depression, sadness, anger and negative emotions. It helps uncover the causes of unhappiness and unproductive or destructive behaviors and eliminate them. It is useful with addictions and phobias, often helping us find the underlying or hidden causes that, once eliminated, allow us to heal. It was originally developed for working with allergies! In my experience it has been helpful with both the psychological and physical effects of trauma and injury. From everyday, run of the mill stresses to huge, elephant in the room traumas, TAT can help in a simple, often fun and delightful way.
Is TAT safe?
When doing TAT, we are never required to relive any traumatic experiences, and in fact, are gently guided away from them by focusing on the Steps. Certified TAT professionals are trained to help with anything that might come up in your session. For this reason, when it comes to working with big or old traumas, working with a TAT Professional is recommended.
What to expect: TAT sessions are simple. After you fill out a basic intake form, we talk about what you would like to address, and then I lead you through the steps of TAT. Often people are surprised to discover the subconscious beliefs that are running their lives, and the healing begins. Your initial session is $125 for 90 minutes, then my fee of $75 an hour for any subsequent sessions.
How do I begin?
I offer TAT sessions both in person and by phone or Zoom/Skype. By phone is just as effective as in person and allows us to connect no matter where we are. The only requirement is a speaker phone so our hands are free. In person, I also offer group TAT sessions on varied themes such as "Developing a Healthy Relationship with Food" (or abundance, or other people) and Stopping Smoking. Please contact me with your concerns and interests to find out more.
a TAT testimonial from a woman who did individual sessions first, and then joined a group:
"My TAT session with Sukoshi was life changing. Over 12 years of marriage, my husband & I had drifted far apart. It seemed we had become much more like roommates than husband & wife. There was lots of tension between us. We each only seemed able to focus on what the other was doing wrong.
After my session we each now see the other with very different loving eyes. I am happy now to see and spend time with him!! We smile and enjoy each other's company now. It has affected his way of being with me as well. I feel in love with him again, something I never thought could ever happen!
If more people did TAT there would in my opinion be much fewer divorces! TAT for me is nothing short of a miracle! I hugely and highly recommend this amazing and beautiful work."
This is a column I wrote for our local paper about what TAT can do:
PTSD and TAT
PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, is a term first introduced in 1980 as a result of research into disorders suffered by Vietnam veterans. Before that time, mental/emotional problems were considered a weakness of the individual. PTSD introduced the concept of trauma, of problems caused by an outside event that overwhelmed the individual.
There are many criteria for PTSD. There must be the trauma that creates terror and helplessness. The recollection criteria might include nightmares, flashbacks, panic. There are behaviors designed to avoid any situation that might stimulate those feelings, such as avoiding crowds, other people and relationships of any intensity.
The list goes on: irritability, insomnia, hyper-vigilance, the startle reflex, and social or occupational distress.
I know and care deeply about PTSD because my father, a survivor of the Bataan Death March and years as a POW, suffered from it. I grew up hearing him pacing the halls at night to escape recurring nightmares. Many people suffer the effects of trauma, from military service and from trauma or abuse in other forms.
In 1995 I got a call from an old friend, a Vietnam vet who had been in a horrific helicopter crash that killed everyone else on board. He had lived with the trauma for nearly 30 years at that point, and had just been introduced to a simple Energy Psychology technique called T.A.T., Tapas Acupressure Technique. In his first session, he felt the weight of trauma leave his body, and from that point on, he became a TAT practitioner and (my) trainer.
No one can guarantee what will help, but TAT changed his life. He shared TAT with me, and it changed mine enough to get certified as a practitioner, too. I hope this column reaches someone who needs help, and that he or she will try it. You can go to the official website: www.tatlife.com and learn how to do it yourself, and if you need help, please call me to find out about sessions and groups.
